Leadership at all levels to (continue) keeping it simple
Here's an interesting insight from an interaction these days. The two of us were very aligned and all we were discussing was natural for us. But my colleague, in fact a sort of ally for making things work better on the "trenches", made this call out: would there be reasons not to put the effort we've been talking about? What would that look like?
That got us thinking about possible counter-arguments, so that we could be better prepared for an eventual interaction where someone could challenge us along those lines… Why do it at all? Or why now, why not leave it to a better moment? Why not wait for leadership to do something more structural about things which are dysfunctional?
They are all valid arguments at some level. They are all also quite easily counter-argument in many levels, in fact. But eventually I did come up with an overarching principle that I do believe can resonate with people broadly…
Any system is naturally prone to entropy, thus tends to chaos. Putting energy into it is the only way to keep things stable, and perhaps hopefully with putting a bit more, deliberately, intentionally, strategically, we can make things slightly better. And ultimately have an upward spiral, instead of the natural downward one.
And as if anyone need further elaboration on that, particularly on what not wait for leadership to take structural action, then I can offer a couple of additional hints:
Why let those that are farther from the action to decide what needs to improve and how?
Why let things get so bad that they (the "big guys" in leadership positions) would feel like only a kind of Draconian intervention could fix things up?
Why wait for the next revolution when we can opt for evolution instead?
I guess for the third time in a role, I can't help but mention it: why risk over-complicating with a disruptive approach if we can keep things simple and do something about it now, on the level we can change or influence?!
That's how leadership at all levels looks like.
